Product Notes

Goats Do Roam The Goatfather wine springs from the fertile vineyards of South Africa's fair Western Cape. This rich and tantalising red blend harmoniously marries Syrah, Grenache, and Mouvedre, beautifully embodying the spirit and character of the native terroir. Plummy-hued, it unfolds generous notes of ripe dark fruits, delicate spices, and soft oaken whispers in a sumptuous bouquet. On the palate, it's an impeccably balanced concerto of juicy berries, delicate smokiness, and a certain earthiness that inevitably evokes the rustic charm of its provenance. Not merely an imbibe; it's an experience. Pair with hearty roasts, bold cheeses, or standalone in its glory.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby red in colour, this medium-bodied wine has pronounced red berry fruit and red cherries on the nose. The palate mirrors the initial aromas with well-integrated tannins leading to a fresh finish.

About the Winery

Goats do Roam

Established on the southbound slopes of the Paarl Mountain Range, the Goats do Roam winery stands tall as one of the most innovative wine producers in South Africa. Recognising the potential of Rhone-style wines, they broke the mould of the traditional Cabernet and Merlot vineyards that adorned the Cape landscape.

Even the name 'Goats do Roam' speaks to their playful football-daft goats, who broke free from their paddocks and leisurely roamed through the vineyards, nibbling at different grape varieties! This inspired them to create a new wine range, where grapes from various locations blended in a harmonious, delicious ensemble.

The charismatic winemaking team, spearheaded by the energetic Charles Back draws inspiration from their beautiful mountainous surrounds and a philosophy of minimal intervention. Guided by the rhythms of nature, the team cultivates a diverse range of Rhone-style grape varieties, offering an intriguing array of wines that dance between the traditional and unexpected.

Their most iconic wine is the amusingly-titled ‘Goats do Roam Red'. A blend of Shiraz, Cinsaut, Grenache, and other varietals boasting a smooth, well-balanced palate that reflects the rich character of the South African terroir. The white wines, constructed from Viognier, Roussanne, and other varietals are distinctly flavourful, with fresh notes of apple and citrus.

If you are fortunate enough to visit, the winery offers tours showcasing the art of winemaking and providing captivating stories about the winery’s history. You might even see, the mischievous goats, who have been an integral part of the Goats do Roam journey.

At Goats do Roam, the passion for creating truly enticing wine radiates, and emanates from the resilience of the vines, the devotion of the team, and, of course, the unruly goats that so famously roam their grounds.

Today, just as those intrepid goats roamed the vineyard, Goats do Roam wines are journeying to all corners of the globe, captivating connoisseurs and curious novices alike. In fact, they've made quite a name for themselves in the international wine community: and for good reason. Their wines always hit the right notes. Isn't that cheery news, indeed.
