Product Notes

Bodegas Castaño Solanera Viñas Viejas is a tantalisingly rich and robust Spanish red wine. Hailing from Yecla region, it harnesses the incredible power of old-vine Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache varietals. Aged for ten months in French and American oak barrels, it exudes luscious aromas of dark cherries and spiced plums. The palate is enveloped by complexities of earthy minerality, intertwined with accents of vanilla and dark chocolate. Its full-bodied texture and velvety tannins round off with a satisfyingly long finish, making it an exceptional accompaniment for hearty meals like roast lamb or mature cheeses. A truly rustic wine of memorable character.

About the Winery

Bodegas Castaño

Settled in the enchanting region of Yecla in stark southeastern Spain is the prestigious Bodegas Castaño winery. This family-run estate has become a beacon for wine enthusiasts and proven that the Yecla region, often overshadowed by its more prestigious neighbours, is capable of producing top-quality wines.

Spanning an impressive 500 hectares, the vineyard is home to an array of grape varieties; however, their crowning glory lies in the Monastrell vine. Known elsewhere as Mourvèdre, Bodegas Castaño has expertly cultivated this thrifty and robust varietal, extracting the best of its character and producing wines of depth and complexity.

The vineyard itself basks in the very Mediterranean climate synonymous with great Monastrell. The region's cool winters, hot summers and low rainfall combine to create a unique environment conducive to producing wines with structure and balance. This coupled with the limestone soils provides the grapes grown with distinct minerality and depth.

However, what sets Bodegas Castaño apart is their commitment to tradition, paired with a constant pursuit for innovation. They strive to maintain the typical characteristics of their grapes while introducing modern viticulture and winemaking techniques. For instance, the use of French and American oak barrels to mature the wines imparts an intriguing character of spice and vanilla to their already delicious offerings.

In contrast to this, traditional aging methods are also deployed their higher end wines are allowed to rest, absorb and meld together in the silence of their extensive underground cellars.

Visit Bodegas Castaño, and you will be treated to a warm welcome, informative tours and, of course, the chance to sample some of their imbibable treasures. The authenticity of this vineyard is tangible, and many leave with a new-found appreciation not just for their wine, but for the detailed and thoughtful process that creates each bottle.

Whilst it's common to cruise through the famous wine regions of Spain, make sure not to miss the humble gem that is Bodegas Castaño for it offers an experience and wine selection you won't find elsewhere.
