Product Notes

Thorne & Daughters Tin Soldier Semillon Gris is an enticingly complex South African wine. Produced from magnificent old vines, it exhibits an alluring buttery-yellow hue. The bouquet offers enticing notes of dried herbs, apricot and white peach. An intriguing waxiness, enhanced by a subtle minerality, seductively coats the palate. The wine's most intriguing feature, however, is its elegant balance of acidity and plump ripeness, resulting in a lingering finish. This outstanding example of Semillon Gris skilfully articulates the finesse and richness of the varietal, making it an exemplary wine for those who appreciate an indulgent yet nuanced white wine experience.

Tasting Notes

The ‘Tin Soldier’ is deep copper in colour due to the partial skin fermentation. On the nose intense aromas of citrus peel and papaya combine with notes of spice, ginger, marzipan and buttered toast. The interplay between sweet and savoury aromas is a key point of interest in the ‘Tin Soldier’ and makes for a subtle and engaging wine. The palate is finely structured, with fresh acidity and full flavours of citrus, gooseberry and sesame seeds. It is dry and delicate, while at the same time showing a core of richness and depth.

About the Winery

Thorne & Daughters

Thorne & Daughters winery is a family-owned vineyard situated in the heart of South Africa's renowned Western Cape. Established by John and Tasha Seccombe in 2012, it’s a testament to their refined palates and vast expertise in the wine making industry.

The couple's irresistible passion for wine is reflected in every bottle they carefully curate, with each variety exhibiting a distinct, individual personality. Favouring a handcrafted approach to wine production, the Seccombes skillfully blend traditional winemaking techniques with modern artistry. As a result, they have succeeded in producing a range of seasonally-influenced wines that are dynamic, balanced and utterly enjoyable.

Against the backdrop of stunning mountain scenery, the fertile slopes of the Seccombe’s vineyards are perfect for producing grapes of exceptional quality. The vineyard’s untamed surroundings also play a major role in inspiring the creation of their standout wines. Thorne & Daughters’ small-scale production emphasises quality over quantity; a rarity in today's fast-paced commercial industry.

The highlight of Thorne & Daughters’ array is undoubtedly the Rocking Horse Cape White, an exclusive blend that has garnered international acclaim. Made from a combination of Roussanne, Chardonnay, Semillon, and Chenin Blanc grapes, the wine is known for its rich fruity flavours and underlying minerality. Just like the Seccombes, this delectable wine tells a compelling story that captures the essence of the South African landscape.

Thorne & Daughters are renowned for their fervour for cultivating exceptional wines with a relentless commitment to sustainability. Their belief in leaving their shimmering terroir richer than they found it serves as an enduring testament to their winemaking philosophy. Their wines are not merely products, but lovingly crafted pieces of liquid art that constantly challenge and captivate the senses.

Garnering considerable praise both locally and internationally since launched, Thorne & Daughters’ heartfelt dedication to their craft is plain to see, taste and savour. This gem of South Africa’s wineries, undeniably, is one to embrace, indulging in the superb wine and soaking up its beauty of the natural surroundings, for an truly unforgettable experience.
