Pantelleria

Pantelleria

Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, halfway between Sicily and Tunisia, you will find Pantelleria, Sicily's southernmost terrarium. An enchanting Italian island, Pantelleria, is a hidden gem known for its mesmerising beauty, rustic charm and, most importantly, its exceptional viniculture. It is as poetic as it sounds - a wild and volcanic landscape encircled by an azure sea, bearing the unique tastes and aromas of its volcanic terroir in its wines.

The island's viticulture heritage dates back to 4000 BC, long before the Phoenicians introduced the emblematic Zibibbo (or Moscato d'Alessandria) vines, which have become Pantelleria’s calling card in the world of wine. Here, the wine-making tradition relies on ancient and meticulous methods. The Zibibbo vines, which cover almost all of Pantelleria's terraced landscape, are pruned and trained into low bushes, forming the "alberello" (small tree) traditional style recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage practice.

These grapes, kissed by the Mediterranean sun and battered by the hot Scirocco winds, produce the island's flagship wine, 'Passito di Pantelleria.' A luscious, amber-coloured dessert wine, the Passito is sweet yet complex, with an aromatic profile touching on apricot, almond, honey, and Mediterranean herbs.

In recent years, dry expressions of Zibibbo have gained recognition, revealing mineral-led, fresh, and aromatic white wines. Indigenous grape varieties such as Catarratto and Pignatello also contribute to Pantelleria’s varied viticulture, offering new flavours and experiences.

Pantelleria's wines are a true testament to nature's raw power and the islanders' resilience, encapsulating the soul of this breezy, sun-soaked, and rugged island. They not only dazzle the palate but also tell a story of a unique landscape and centuries-old tradition. Whether it be the sublime Passito di Pantelleria or crisp, dry Zibibbo, wines from Pantelleria, Sicily, Italy are an enriching exploration of taste and place.
