Carignano

Carignano

The Carignano grape, also known as Carignan in other regions, is a dark-skinned variety native to the Mediterranean region, specifically, Spain. Cultivated primarily in the Carignano del Sulcis zone in Sardinia, Italy, it thrives in warm and dry conditions, an attribute which makes it particularly adaptable to vineyards.

Carignano is known for its hardy nature, being resistant to harsh weather, bugs and pests. The vine produces bunches of large, deep blue grapes that mature late in the growing season. Due to its incredibly high yields, Carignano has earned a somewhat workhorse reputation among viticulturists. The grape's affinity for producing large quantities if not carefully managed, can result in wines that lack concentration and complexity.

However, in skilled hands, Carignano can be crafted into remarkably robust and full-bodied wines. These wines usually showcase strong fruit characteristics of blackberry and raspberry, alongside prominent tannins and a hint of spiciness. The grape's natural acidity when properly controlled, balances out its intensity, allowing for a refreshing element in the palate.

In addition to producing single-varietal wines, Carignano is often blended with other grape varieties like Grenache and Syrah, creating wines with more complexity, body and aromatic appeal. In recent years, Italian wine producers have been applying modern viticultural and winemaking techniques to better control the yield and enhance the quality of wines produced from Carignano.

A trend towards more careful management of the vines to produce lower yields has emerged. This has resulted in wines of greater concentration and depth, shifting the perception of Carignano from a bulk wine producer to a grape capable of delivering premium quality.

Given its hardiness and ability to thrive in challenging climates, Carignano is gradually establishing its presence in the new world wine regions as well, notably in California and Australia, where it continues to contribute to the global winemaking landscape.
