Tinta Roriz

The Tinta Roriz grape, also known as the Tempranillo in Spain, is a variety of black grape that has its home in the vineyards of Portugal, particularly in the Douro, Dão and Bairrada regions. It is commonly used in the production of full-bodied red wines, thanks to its bountiful tannins, dark pigmentation and moderate acidity.

A key attribute of the Tinta Roriz grape is its versatility; it can yield sharp and robust wines when grown in cooler climates and more fruit-driven, alcohol-infused wines when grown in warmer climates. The introduction of the Tinta Roriz grape to the winemaking processes of Port in the 18th century deeply enriched its character, lending it an intense ruby hue and an incomparably deep, distinctive flavour profile. Today, Tinta Roriz continues to be central to the notoriously rich and fortified wines of Portugal, and its influence can be found in other old world wines as well as new world variations.
