About the Winery

Domaine Leon Barral

Nestled within the heart of French wine country, Domaine Leon Barral epitomises the epitome of artisan winemaking. Maintaining the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, this prestigious winery has upheld traditions since its establishment in 1993.

Spread across 30 hectares in the Faugères appellation in Languedoc, the vineyard's unique terroir is best depicted through its productive slate soil. This contributes significantly to the naturally intense and powerful characteristics the domaine's wine is renowned for. The vineyards primarily grow Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah grape varietals which come to maturity under the time-honoured care and attention of the vineyard's pioneers.

At Domaine Leon Barral, the cultivation method prides itself in promoting biodiversity within the vineyard. Thus promoting a rich ecosystem where nature and agriculture coexist harmoniously. Pioneered by the late Didier Barral, the vineyard continues to practice this mantra, enriching their land without the use of artificial chemicals.

Unique to this storied winery, is its practice of allowing cows, pigs and horses to graze freely amongst the vines added the much-needed organic matter back into the soil. By utilising biodynamic techniques, the biodiversity of the vineyard is protected, which plays a crucial role in nourishing and revitalising the soil.

The belief in the winery's low intervention, "hands-off" style is brought to the fore in their wine-making process. Grapes are meticulously hand-picked, wild yeasts are used to ferment the must and old wooden casks are used for aging, which ensures minimal disturbance to the wine and better expression of the terroir.

Domaine Leon Barral’s winemaking approach results in wines that are remarkably refined and complex, standing out as proponents of sustainable and organic viticulture. If you value honest, naturally made wines visit the Domaine Leon Barral, is a must: for a taste of nature’s best work. They are a testament to what is achievable when nature and winemaking come together in perfect harmony.
