Product Notes

Scala Dei Massipa wine is a distinguished Spanish wine originating in the Priorat region. Crafted with perfectly balanced blends of Garnacha and Carignan, this wine boasts exquisite texture and depth. Its delectable complexity is revealed in layers of blackberry and plum notes, mingled gracefully with hints of spice, licorice, and mineral tones. Aged in French oak barrels, Scala Dei Massipa imparts a spicy finish that wonderfully complements its rich, concentrated flavour. This full-bodied red wine, with its firm tannins and vibrant acidity, pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes, elevating any dining experience. Delightfully bold and refined, it truly captures the essence of Priorat.

Tasting Notes

Beautiful stoned fruit and fennel seed aromas dominate the nose with subtle undertones of spice and flowers. The barrel aging brings texture, whilst the Chenin lifts the acidity to yield a wine of exceptional balance and elegance.

About the Winery

Scala Dei

Nestled in the hushed valleys of Priorat, Catalonia, Spain, lies the enchanting Scala Dei winery. The winery, with its breath-taking beauty and rich history, weaves an enchanting tale of winemaking that dates back to the twelfth century. It is believed, monks of the Cartoixa of Scala Dei first introduced vine cultivation in the region, setting a historic trend that runs through the local veins to this day.

The name Scala Dei, translated into 'Stairway to God', has a spiritual allure indeed, illustrating the ethereal beauty that surrounds the winery. Scenic mountains, loamy soil and a Mediterranean climate provide the unique terroir. The vineyards captivate visitors not just by the serene environment but also by the carefully managed old vines, which include Grenache, Carignan, and a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The Sloping vineyards carpeted with slate (locally known as 'llicorella') harbour grapes which produce wines of unrivalaled character.

The Scala Dei philosophy is deeply rooted in the combination of traditional practices and modern winemaking techniques. Their commitment to express the essence of Priorat through their wines is what sets them apart. The wines capture the distinct qualities of their varied vineyard sites, revealing a sense of place, intensity of flavour, and minerality that is synonymous with the region. From the bold Scala Dei Prior, an homage to the Carthusian monks, to the elegant Cartoixa made primarily from old-vine Grenache, each sip offers a burst of flavour and a glimpse of the winery's historical grandeur.

Innovation is key at Scala Dei too, Their "tailored vine-growing" approach focuses on individual vine's needs, thus augmenting the overall quality and character of their wines. It's the perfect blend of tradition and modernity that gives wines from Scala Dei, its revered status in the world of viticulture. Even for the casual visitor a trip to this winery isn't just an excuse for a pleasant day wine tasting, it's a journey through the ages!
