Tasting Note

Purple in colour with a crimson rim, this wine opens with vibrant Grenache-driven fruit, immediately evoking a sensory journey to an Arabian spice souk—whole pimento, fenugreek, pink peppercorns, anise, and musk intertwine with lifted notes of cola, balsamic-glazed ham, poached quince, sloe berry, and a hint of Campari. Layers of German Schwarzwälder cake and tea-smoked duck add depth and intrigue. On the palate, the blend of varietals works in seamless harmony, delivering a juicy yet precise fruit profile with flavours of lingonberry, loganberry, olallieberry, and red currant. Savoury notes of green tomato salsa and lemon myrtle olives provide contrast, while bright acidity and fine tannins support a beautifully structured wine that is already drinking well and offers great versatility with food.

The wine, maturing gracefully in seasoned oak barrels, embodies balance and complexity, rendering itself a perfect companion to hearty meat dishes. It's an excellent addition to your cellar, promising to delight over several years.

About the Winery

Penfolds

Established in the heart of Adelaide in 1844, Penfolds winery is one of Australia's oldest and most renowned wine-producing estates. Over the centuries, this impressive winery has crafted an invincible reputation for producing wines of exceptional quality, notably its world-famous Grange and St. Henri Shiraz.

Thomas Penfold and his wife Mary embarked on wine production at their Magill Estate after immigrating from England. Penfold’s initial intention was to craft fortified wines in the style of those he admired in Europe, specifically, his cherished homeland. However, over time the potential for producing quality table wines was realised and Penfolds has since become a global icon.

Among the winery's remarkable collections, the most celebrated offering is undeniably the 'Penfolds Grange'. This Shiraz wine, crafted by the pioneering winemaker Max Schubert is among the most coveted and enduring labels on the global wine stage. Known for its rich intensity and remarkable longevity the Grange is synonymous with prestige in the world of wine.

Nestled amongst the rolling Adelaide Hills, the winery is a sight to behold. With its distinctive historic charm, juxtaposed with cutting-edge wine-making techniques, Penfolds has managed to maintain an enchanting balance of tradition and innovation. Visitors are greeted by lush vineyards, meticulously tended to ensure the production of quality grapes. A walk through the Penfolds cellar door is an immersion into history; as each stone and barrel tell tales of wine craftsmanship honed over centuries.

What's interesting however, is Penfolds winery's firm belief in multi-regional blending. Unlike most wineries who staunchly adhere to single-vineyard or single-region wines, Penfolds uses grapes from various regions across the country. To the experts at Penfolds, the synergy resulting from the blend ensures a profound depth and complexity of flavour that simply cannot be achieved otherwise.

In conclusion, Penfolds winery is an iconic cornerstone of the Australian wine industry. A visit to this elegant estate, is not merely about tasting wines of world class quality, but also accompanied by a journey through a labyrinth of history and the passionate narrative of a craft perfected over time. A haven for wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike!
