Unlike most grapes that yield clear juice, the Alicante Bouschet is a teinturier grape, a term referencing the deep, dark, almost inky hue of the juice. This quality makes it highly sought after for blending, adding depth of colour to wines that may lack it.

Originating from France, Alicante Bouschet is the outcome of the cross-breeding of Petit Bouschet and Grenache grapes by French viticulturist Henri Bouschet in the 19th century. While it gained popularity during the Prohibition era in the United States due to the grape's thick skin, which allowed it to be transported discreetly in lieu of the banned alcoholic beverages, it is less prevalent today.

In terms of flavour, the Alicante Bouschet grape offers bold and cheeky notes of blueberries, blackberries and sometimes a hint of earthy tones. The wines crafted with this variety are characterised by their vibrant acidity, moderate to high tannin levels, and a medium body, though this can vary depending on where it is cultivated.

Presently, the Alicante Bouschet grape has found a well-adapted home in Portugal, particularly in the Alentejo region, where it produces some of the country's finest wines. Additionally, it is grown in Spain, dubbed Alicante, where it is used mainly for rose and young red wines. Other regions that cultivate this grape include Southern France, California, and parts of Eastern Europe, albeit in more controlled quantities.

Despite its lesser recognition compared to other grape varieties, Alicante Bouschet is a grape that showcases the depth and variety possible in winemaking. It is a hidden gem for wine makers and enthusiast alike, who appreciate the unusual dark juice and the distinct flavour and body it contributes to wines.
