About François Chidaine
François Chidaine is one of the Loire Valley’s most respected vignerons, known for his deep commitment to biodynamics and his thoughtful, vineyard-first approach to winemaking. The estate is based in Montlouis-sur-Loire, just across the river from Vouvray in France’s central Loire region. Chidaine began working alongside his father in the late 1980s and formally took over the family domaine in 1989. Over the decades, he has expanded the holdings to include parcels in both Montlouis and Vouvray, as well as select plots in Touraine.
The winery remains family-owned and independently run, with François and his wife, Manuela, playing central roles in both viticulture and cellar decisions. Their vineyards—planted primarily to Chenin Blanc—are farmed biodynamically, a philosophy Chidaine adopted in the late 1990s to enhance soil vitality and express each site’s character more transparently. Today, the estate is widely admired for its precision-crafted wines that range from dry and mineral to richly textured or sweet, depending on the vintage and parcel.
Chidaine’s reputation is built on meticulous vineyard work, gentle cellar handling, and an unwavering respect for terroir. His wines consistently highlight the elegance, longevity, and complexity that Chenin Blanc can achieve in the Loire Valley.
