Dalmatia

Dalmatia, Croatia's coastal region, is not just famed for its stunning beauty of rugged landscapes and idyllic, clear blue Adriatic waters, it also possesses a lesser-known, yet equally distinguished quality — that of its superior winemaking tradition. Wine has been produced in Dalmatia for more than two millenniums and today, its wines, produced from native Croatian grapes, are held in high esteem worldwide.

The Dalmatian wine is characterised by its unique combination of favourable Mediterranean climate, diverse soil types and indigenous grape varieties, introducing countless possibilities for winemakers to craft unique infusions. The main grape varieties used are Plavac Mali, Babić, Pošip and Debit. Plavac Mali, or 'little blue', creates robust and fruity reds with bite. This grape is often linked to Californian Zinfandel due to its strikingly similar flavour profile. The white wines, made from the Pošip and Debit grapes, often offer a fresh, dynamic and mineral wine, wonderfully balanced and expressive.

Small-scale, family-owned estates dominate Dalmatian winemaking, faithfully maintaining the centuries-old methods while integrating modern techniques. These are wines imbued with a distinct personality, embodying the Adriatic sun, maritime breezes and calcareous soils in every bottle.

The rugged terrain and close proximity to the sea offer not only excellent conditions for grape growing but also scenic vineyards that rival those of the Italian and French Riviera. The breath-taking beauty of these vineyards, often nestled amidst ancient ruins or terraced on steep slopes facing the sea, adds to the charm of Dalmatian wines.

Wholly Croatian and impervious to compromise, Dalmatian wines are a testament to the passion, perseverance, and expertise of local winemakers. These wines are seen as a celebration of the Dalmatian landscape, a combination of boldness and subtlety, best enjoyed overlooking the azure horizon dotted with islands.
