Cyprus

Cyprus wine, steeped in rich heritage dating back over 5,000 years, is an integral part of the Cypriot culture. Located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, Cyprus enjoys an ideal grape-growing climate with abundant sunshine and moderate rainfall, resulting in a unique terroir that wonderfully influences the taste of its wines.

This Mediterranean island produces an impressive range of wines – from full-bodied reds to light and crisp whites, and even delightful rosés. Indigenous grape varieties such as the white Xynisteri and red Maratheftiko are widely cultivated and appreciated. Xynisteri, grown in high-altitude vineyards, creates a fresh and mineral-driven white wine with a moderating acidity, while Maratheftiko, a lesser-known variety, yields a robust, tannic, and deeply coloured red wine.

Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes, is an iconic offering from Cyprus. Recognised as the world’s oldest named wine, it reveals a historical charm, boasting a rich bouquet of dried fruits, spices, and honey.

Several boutique wineries dot Cyprus’ wine trails, inviting visitors to sample endemic wine varieties and explore their scenic vineyards. These wineries blend traditional methods with contemporary practices, producing an exquisite range of wines with distinctive character.

Despite its small size, Cyprus has made a notable presence on the international stage with its high-quality and diverse wines. Its successful implementation of modern wine-producing techniques, whilst preserving age-old traditions, is testament to its passion and dedication, shaping its reputation as a world-class wine producer.

An unravelling encounter with Cypriot wines is more than just a tasting - it is a fascinating voyage into the spectrum of sensory experiences, gleaning insights into the island’s viticulture history and authenticity. For wine aficionados and casual drinkers alike, Cyprus wine stands out as a timeless blend of history, nature, and craftsmanship.
