Southern Rhone

Southern Rhône, located in the sun-drenched southeastern region of France, is renowned worldwide for producing some of the most opulent and distinctive wines. This iconic wine region is redolent with charming vineyards, many of which are clustered along the meandering Rhône River, and it utilises a wide confluence of grape varieties, albeit it is best known for its outstanding red wines.

The full-bodied and flavoursome red wines of Southern Rhône are often crafted from a harmonious blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes, also known as the 'GSM' blend. Grenache, the primary ingredient, lends a luscious sweetness and intoxicating fruity aromas to the wines, whilst Syrah adds acidity and tannic structure, with Mourvèdre offering firmness and complimentary flavours of dark fruits and herbs.

Set amid the region’s sundrenched landscapes, the compact hilltop village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape holds particular esteem. It is the pinnacle of Southern Rhône’s wine production, crafting complex, full-bodied reds which garner international acclaim for their longevity and exceptional quality. Many wines from this area boast high alcohol levels, rich textures, and overlapping notes of dark fruit, herbs, and spices.

Meanwhile, the picturesque towns of Gigondas and Vacqueyras offer robust, full-flavoured wines that are tantalisingly earthy, with charming rustic undertones. On the lighter side, the Côtes du Rhône appellation covers an extensive tract of vineyard plantings, producing easy-drinking, approachable wines which mirror the main varietals.

Rosé and white wines are also produced in Southern Rhône, though less frequently. They tend to exude a delicate bouquet of citrus fruits, peaches, and floral undertones, along with exotic hints of spices.

Southern Rhône's diverse terroir – comprising limestone-rich soils, rugged hills, and a quintessentially Mediterranean climate – contributes to its rich winemaking heritage.
