Mallorca

Drawing from the innate richness of the Mediterranean, the left-behind marks of Rome and Moorish vines, Mallorca wine divisions on the Balearic Islands of Spain are a treasure for oenophiles. An alchemy of conditions, including the fertile soil, sprinkling of sunlight, and sea's cooling breath, have combined to make Mallorca wines a celebrated entity on the global stage.

Mallorca's wine history dates back to Roman and Moorish times, and despite a phylloxera plague in the late 19th century, the industry has surged with new life over the last few decades. Today, this Spanish paradise is home to more than 70 vineyards, divided into two wine regions: Binissalem and Plà I Llevant, both recognised as 'Denominacions d’origen', akin to the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in France.

The topography and microclimate of the island favour a diverse range of grape varieties, predominantly the native Manto Negro for reds and Moll for whites. Whether it's the light, breezy whites, the full-bodied, aromatic reds, or the enticing Rosados (rosés), Mallorca produces wines that are as vibrant as the island's culture itself.

Mallorca wines have a signature freshness, a direct gift from the sea breeze, which helps temper the fierce Spanish sun. The red wines are generally intense and velvety, the whites are crisp and fruity, while the Rosados carry a refreshing note and a pleasant acidity.

In essence, Mallorca wine is an expression of the island’s personality: charming, vivacious, and rustic. It perfectly pairs with the Spanish cuisine served on the island, from “pa amb oli” (bread with oil) to the grand seafood paella, underlining Mallorca’s commitment to capture the essence of its terroir in a bottle. So, when you next sip a Mallorca wine, you are tasting not just a beverage, but a part of Spain's thrilling history and vibrant culture. A taste of these wines gives you a flavour of the island's luscious landscape, seasoned by the Mediterranean sun and sea.
