Manchuela

Manchuela, tucked away between Valencia, Alicante and Albacete, is a remarkable Spanish wine region not yet fully explored by connoisseurs. Known for its beautiful vineyards that stretch across its high-altitude plains, Manchuela is a hidden gem in Spain's extensive wine country. The region enjoys a unique microclimate, characterised by extremely cold winters and scorching summers which, in turn, contributes greatly to shaping the distinct character of Manchuela's wines.

This picturesque region primarily produces wines using the Bobal grape, an indigenous variety that often goes unheralded in the broader wine-drinking world. These hearty, robust grapes positively thrive in Manchuela's testing climate, resulting in deep, flavourful wines brimming with character. The medium-bodied reds produced here are typically rich and fruity, with a palate showcasing an intriguing medley of berries, cherries and dark chocolate. As for the whites, these often exude delightful floral notes of white roses and hawthorn, along with a luscious core of golden fruits.

Unexpected though it might be, Manchuela also fosters an incredible rose wine industry. Made yet again from the Bobal grape, these rose wines exhibit deeply enticing aromas of fresh strawberries and raspberries with a crisp and refreshing finish, making them the ultimate summer quaff.

Manchuela remains an underappreciated region, its potential not entirely exploited by the wine enthusiasts. Yet, this hilly terrain cradled between rivers Jucar and Cabriel, produces variants of wine that speak volumes of the land's distinctive qualities. Expression of rich history, tradition and local grape varietals defines the essence of Manchuela's wines. Increasingly, wine lovers in the know are recognising and appreciating the distinctive wines springing from this unpretentious corner of Spain, and are drawn to explore their intriguing array of flavours. Manchuela truly is an untapped treat for the discerning oenophile.
