Howell Mountain

Howell Mountain, situated in the illustrious Napa Valley in California, is one of the most prestigious wine regions in the USA and arguably, the globe. This elevated region, characterised by its unique microclimate and distinctive volcanic soil, yields a niche grape variety that produces incredulously complex and richly flavoured wines.

Perched majestically at elevations spanning from 1,400 to 2,200 feet, Howell Mountain vines are well above the fog line that often blankets lower regions of Napa, thus basking in sunlight for a longer duration each day. This prolific sunshine, combined with the heat retaining qualities of the volcanic ash soil, lends an intensified richness to the wines, largely known for their unique balance of intensity and elegance.

Arguably the region's most iconic grape varietal is the Cabernet Sauvignon, distinguishable by a robust profile of dark fruits with an underlining mineral complexity, complimented by a uniquely bold structure and tannin depth. Ageing gracefully, these Cabs are extremely cellar-worthy, improving markedly with time. Other grape varieties grown in this region include Merlot, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay, all with distinct character traits due to the mountainous terroir.

With a wine history dating back to the late 19th Century, the Howell Mountain appellation was regarded as a premier wine-producing region long before the rise of Napa Valley’s international reputation. In 1983, it became the first sub-region within Napa to be granted its own AVA, testament to the singular nature of its wines.

Despite this rich heritage, the Howell Mountain maintains an approachable sense of bucolic serenity. Its wineries, known for their generous hospitality and intimate tasting experiences, are often nestled amid uncompromisingly beautiful sceneries. Every sip of a Howell Mountain wine is not just a taste of exquisite manifestation of the land, but an immersion into a time-honoured viticulture tradition.
