Callet

The Callet grape is a unique varietal predominantly found in the sun-bathed region of the Balearic Islands in Spain, most notably on the island of Mallorca. This variety is appreciated for its distinctive ability to create full-bodied, robust wines known for their intense colouring, hearty character, and exceedingly pleasant aroma.

Callet is an indigenous species, mostly used in blends with other varieties, such as Manto Negro and Fogoneu, and rarely bottled as a pure varietal wine. While it does not yield larger quantities, its inherent value lies in the exceptional quality of the small batches it produces.

The grape itself is small to medium with a round shape, characterised by a thick, darkly coloured skin. This results in wines with a deep, profound hue and a high tannin content. Upon maturity, Callet grapes display a note-worthy red colour with velvety textures and spicy, earthy undertones, reminiscing of the Mediterranean landscape.

Callet wines, due to their full-bodied structure and depths of flavour, pair exceptionally well with local Mallorcan cuisine. They complement boldly flavoured dishes like roasted lamb, suckling pig, and other hearty meat-based meals.

Over the years, winemakers have begun to recognise the special qualities of Callet grapes. There is a resurgence in their cultivation and use, owing to the development of viticultural techniques tailor-suited to this grape's unique traits. It is now considered an essential part of the DO (Denominación de Origen) Binissalem-Mallorca.

In conclusion, Callet grape is a prestigious variety that has captivated the interest of winemakers and sommeliers alike with its deep, robust flavours and dynamic blending capacity. Though it may be lesser-known on a global scale, those familiar with it understand its exceptional value and cherish it as a gem of the Mediterranean winemaking tradition.
