Cesanese

Cesanese is a distinctive grape variety that is indigenous to Italy. Despite being less recognised on the international wine scene compared to its Italian counterparts like Sangiovese or Nebbiolo, Cesanese holds a special place in Italy's viticultural history and continues to yield wines with unique, captivating profiles.

The Cesanese grape is predominantly found in the Lazio region, particularly in the hilly areas surrounding Rome. Here, the grape enjoys an optimal Mediterranean climate and diverse soils that contribute to the complexity of the wines produced.

Cesanese produces predominantly red and rosé wines, with reds making up a significant majority. The wines are characterised by their striking ruby red colour and a robust, full-bodied quality. On the nose, one can detect distinct notes of ripe dark fruit, most notably black cherry and plum, accented by subtle hints of spice and earthy undertones. The wines also exhibit a multi-layered palate, featuring moderate acidity, ample tannins and a balanced, harmonious finish.

Cesanese wines are also revered for their versatility and food-friendliness. They pair remarkably well with a range of Italian fare, from hearty pasta dishes to grilled meats, and can be enjoyed both young and with a bit of age.

Historically, Cesanese has not enjoyed much success outside of Italy. However, in recent years, there has been a growing interest in this understated grape variety, owing to the efforts of talented local winemakers and a growing global curiosity towards lesser-known indigenous varieties. As a result, the future of Cesanese looks promising, and it looks set to be an exciting part of Italy's rich wine tapestry.

Overall, Cesanese is a grape variety with unique characteristics, making wines that possess charm, character, and complexity. It is indicative of Italy's rich biodiversity and an excellent showcase of the distinctiveness of Italian viniculture.
