Chinuri

The Chinuri grape is a notable Georgian vine variety, primarily cultivated in the central region of Kartli. This white grape variety is widely recognised for producing premium white wines with a distinctive character noted for its aroma and taste.

The grapes are medium-sized, rounded and clustered compactly on the vines. Chinuri grapes have a relatively thick skin that provides significant resistance to diseases and pests, thus making it easier for vine growers to cultivate and maintain. The vines typically grow well in clayey, limestone soils and like other Georgian grape varieties, Chinuri vine is often found growing on slopes where exposure to sunlight is high.

When it comes to the wine, Chinuri is known for creating an exceptionally refreshing blend with remarkable acidity and citrus notes. Notably, the Chinuri grape produces wines that are high in tannins, manifested as a slight bitterness when tasted, but their ageing process brings out enticingly complex flavours. With age, the wine assumes a richness with notes of honey, dried fruits and spices, rendering the Chinuri-based wine into an exquisite treat.

Distinctly, Chinuri also serves as an excellent ingredient for the traditional Georgian sparkling wine. It is often mixed with Goruli and Aligoté grapes to produce the famed “AOC Atenuri” - a sparkling wine which is highly regarded both locally and internationally.

In conclusion, the Chinuri grape continues to play an integral role in Georgia's wine culture. With its robust features and tantalising selection of flavour intricacies, this vine variety is a testament to the region's rich viticultural heritage.
