Falanghina

Falanghina

Falanghina grape, an ancient Italian variety, is specifically rooted in the diverse agricultural panorama of southern Italy. Primarily concentrated across Campania and Sannio, this grape is used to produce a range of dry white wines valued for their strong identity, freshness, and versatility. The grape is renowned for its distinctive nutty aromas layered with floral overtones and accented by delicate notes of pear and apple. The full-bodied wines from this grape have a robust structure and high acidity, making them well-suited for aging.

Historically, Falanghina grape was used in the renowned Roman wine ‘Falernian’, much cherished by the Roman elites. Its name origin traces back to the Latin method of vine cultivation called 'Phalanga', referring to the stakes or poles used to support the grapevines. Typically, it grows in volcanic soils characteristic of the Campania region. Such fertile terrains nourish it with unique flavours that can be savoured in the resulting wine.

Oenologically speaking, the Falanghina grape is generally vinified as a monovarietal. It offers a spectrum of experiences depending on the microclimate and terroir it grows in, with some variations demonstrating more citrusy, while others more tropical characteristics. The resultant wine is often replete with vivacious acidity and crisp tinges, ranging between hues of light to deep golden yellow.

Falanghina wine pairs excellently with seafood dishes, thanks to its aromatic showcase. It also complements everyday cooking such as creamy pasta and grilled vegetables, owing to its balance between fruitiness and acidity. The Falanghina grape remains a deep-rooted symbol of Italian viticultural heritage and is increasingly appreciated amongst wine enthusiasts for its distinct character, complexity and delightful drinking experience.
