Fernao Pires

The Fernao Pires grape, native to Portugal, is one of the country's oldest and most aromatic varieties. The grape, also known as Maria Gomes in certain regions, is primarily grown in the Bairrada and Tejo wine regions on the coast, but it has also spread throughout central and southern Portugal.

Being a highly versatile grape, Fernao Pires can be grown in varying climates and soils, from cool sea breezes to arid inland regions. The grape's success primarily counts on meticulous winemaking choices which can either underscore the grape's boldness or allow its subtle delicacies to shine through.

The Fernao Pires grape is renowned for its rich and intense aromatics, often compared to Muscat. It displays dominant notes of lemon, lime, melon, honeysuckle and orange blossom on the nose, followed by herbal undertones. The wine created from these grapes is usually off-dry and medium-bodied with a subtle effervescence and a zippy acidity that helps balance its rich, tropical fruit flavours.

Winemakers prefer to produce wines using Fernao Pires which can be consumed when young to preserve their aromatic qualities. The grape is also frequently used in blends due to its strong aromatic profile. Besides, some interesting late-harvest, noble rot affected, and even sparkling wines have been produced using this varietal.

Given the grape's fascinating character, it's interesting how it has remained a relatively unexplored variety outside of Portugal. But with the increased interest in indigenous grape varieties, Fernao Pires has been receiving more attention among wine enthusiasts worldwide. Its distinctive profile offers a refreshing change for those looking for something different from common white wines. The quality of Fernao Pires wines coupled with their reasonable pricing makes this grape a hidden gem in the world of wines. Its unique pairing possibilities with various foods, particularly Asian cuisine and seafood, have made it a beloved choice for many oenophiles.
