Fiano di Avellino

Fiano di Avellino is a prized grape variety native to the Campania region of southern Italy. It is recognised as one of Italy's finest white wine-producing grapes and is responsible for the highly-acclaimed DOCG Fiano di Avellino wine. Typically, the grape produces elegant, light-bodied wines with distinctive aromas of blossom, citrus fruits, honey and nuts.

This grape thrives in the volcanic soils of Avellino, in the cooler, higher vineyards situated inland from the Amalfi coast. The unique conditions here contribute to the grape's characteristically high acidity and longevity. As such, Fiano di Avellino wines are known to age extraordinarily well, acquiring greater complexity as they mature.

Traditionally, Fiano di Avellino was used mainly in blends. However, in the mid-20th century, the Mastroberardino family led efforts to rejuvenate the variety, and it's now commonly featured as a single varietal wine. Typical tasting notes often refer to bright citrus flavours, accented by sweeter hints of honey, hazelnuts, and sometimes even spicy notes. Its acidity is balanced by warmth and roundness, making it a pleasure to drink.

The Fiano grape’s thick skins make it resilient to adverse weather conditions and diseases, but it yields only small crops, contributing to its uniqueness and exclusivity. It is harvested generally towards the end of October, with the grapes being meticulously hand-picked to ensure that only those of the highest quality are used.

In addition to its local fame, Fiano di Avellino has gained recognition internationally and continues to grow in popularity. A hallmark of Campanian winemaking, it beautifully expresses the terroir of southern Italy, offering wine-lovers a delightful alternative to more common white wine grapes. Despite its high status amongst Italian wine grapes, Fiano di Avellino remains humble in its origins, representing the rich heritage and vibrant culture of small-scale southern Italian viticulture. It's a grape of unequivocal quality, rewarding both the novice and expert wine connoisseur alike. Abound with unique delights, Fiano di Avellino truly provides a taste of Italy.
