Field Blend

The Field Blend is not a single grape variety but rather a unique concept in wine production where different grape varieties are grown, harvested, and fermented together. This blend is reminiscent of a traditional practice observed by vintners before the rise of modern single-variette viticulture.

In the UK, Field Blend grapes are gradually finding a place in the hearts of wine connoisseurs. This technique of co-planting different grape types in the same vineyard, typically a mix of both red and white, offers a myriad of flavours. The blend of the grape varieties varies widely as it often depends on the individual vineyard’s plantings and no two may be the same. This means, with each Field Blend, wine lovers get a taste that is distinct and unique.

Field Blend wines are known for their fascinating character and depth of taste. Each grape intricately contributes a different flavour or property to the wine – some might add more acidity, some may offer more sweetness, while others could lend it a more robust body. The resulting wine is sublime, offering a surprise to the palate with every sip.

One notable feature of Field Blend grapes is that they are harvested and vinified together. It's an intricate process that requires expertise as the vintner must judge the perfect time to harvest, striking the most favourable balance between ripe and underripe grapes.

No other wine could represent the true 'terroir' and vintage than a Field Blend as every permutation reflects the specific character of a vineyard and its weather that year. The common varieties used in Field Blends include but are not limited to Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignan. However, the actual combination can be much broader and adventurous.

Field Blends allow wine lovers to appreciate the complex dance of flavours where the sum is greater than its parts. It encapsulates the tradition, showcasing an age-old practice in the modern world of wine.
