Giró

Giró grape is a traditional variety of grape originating from Spain, specifically the Spanish islands of Majorca and Ibiza. This grape, also known as Giró ros, is widely celebrated for its intense dark colour and rich aromatic profile, predominately used in winemaking for creating high-quality rosé and red wines. Giró grapes grow in hot Mediterranean climates and are typically high-yielding, delivering an abundance of fruit come harvest time.

One of the distinctive characteristics of the Giró grape is its unusually thick skin. This protects the grape from harsh weather conditions and pests, while also providing a remarkable concentration of tannins, colour and aromatic compounds. Wines produced from Giró grapes often exhibit striking ruby-red hues, with flavours and aromas resembling dark fruits, licorice, spice, and earth. Many winemakers favour Giró grapes for their ability to produce red wines with a balanced acid-to-alcohol ratio, providing a smoother taste and a harmonious finish.

In Majorca, one can find this grape as the primary component in Binissalem DO wines alongside other local and international varietals. As it is quite disease resistant, the Giró grape has been able to survive the phylloxera plague that devastated many European vineyards in the late 19th century, and continues to persist as a distinctive and cherished grape variety in the region.

While the Giró grape remained relatively obscure to the international wine scene for some time, it is now gaining recognition due to growing interest in indigenous grape varieties. Grapes like Giró, with their unique taste profiles and history, bring something different and exciting to the world of enology. Today, wine enthusiasts can enjoy a taste of the Mediterranean through a glass of wine made from the Giró grape, regardless of whether they are in Britain or abroad.
