Macabeu

The Macabeu grape is a white grape variety grown primarily in the regions of Catalonia and the Roussillon area of France. Being one of the most widely planted white wine grapes in its homeland of Catalonia, Spain, the grape also known as Viura in certain regions, is indispensable in the production of the country's sparkling wine, Cava.

Macabeu grapes are characterised by their relatively thin skins. When perfectly ripened, they yield high sugar levels, producing wines with excellent ageing potential. The grape is naturally high in acidity, which helps to balance its sweetness and endows the resultant wine with a crisp backbone. It imparts fresh and floral flavours, often showcasing delicate hints of green apple and pear, sometimes accented by notes of honey and hawthorn.

Macabeu wine's light freshness and balanced acidity make it a versatile pairing for a wide array of dishes. It complements seafood splendidly - particularly shellfish. It also shines alongside lean poultry, fresh salads, and creamy white cheeses.

Due to its adaptability to various climates and terrains, the popularity of the Macabeu grape has stretched beyond its Spanish origins. In the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the South of France, the grape is blended with other indigenous varieties to produce the popular Roussillon white wines. It also plays a key role in the production of white Rioja in Spain.

While the Macabeu grape tends to be overshadowed by other better-known varietals, there is a growing appreciation for its potential to produce a singular and expressive white wine. Fresh and balanced, Macabeu-based wines are enjoyable for both the novice and the experienced wine enthusiast. Whether sipped on a summer's day or savoured over a dinner party, Macabeu offers a delightful hint of the Mediterranean in each glass.
