Marselan

Marselan

The Marselan grape is a rather intriguing wine grape varietal that first emerged in France. It is the progeny of two renowned grape varieties – the Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. The grape owes its existence to Paul Truel, a French viticulturist, who created this hybrid in 1961 with the aim of coupling the rich, robust character of Cabernet Sauvignon with the adaptability and high-yield feature of Grenache.

Marselan grapes are diminutive in size and thus have a higher skin-to-juice ratio. This attribute lends Marselan wines a remarkable depth of colour and a robust structure. They yield full-bodied red wines featuring a good balance between tannin and acidity. The aromatic profile is typically characterised by a melange of red fruits such as raspberries, cherries and blackberries, layered with spicy and herbal notes.

As with its parent varieties, the Marselan finds its roots in French vineyards, with remarkable presences in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. However, it has prudently ventured beyond French borders, spreading its tendrils across various wine-producing corners globally. Argentina, China, Brazil and California in the United States are among the regions that have enthusiastically embraced the cultivation of Marselan grapes.

In terms of climate, Marselan grapes are most comfortable in conditions that balance both Cabernet's demand for measured heat and Grenache's preference for warmer climates. In general, they benefit from a longer growing season to achieve full ripeness.

Though relatively new to the wine scene, the Marselan grape has been seized upon for its robust potential. Vintners appreciate its disease-resistant characteristic and the quality of the rich, potent wines it produces. For wine enthusiasts, Marselan wines are enticing for their complex flavour profiles, making them an exciting exploration for those seeking to taste something different.
