Nero di Troia is an indigenous grape variety originating from the Puglia region in southern Italy, specifically from the sub-region of Troia, where it derives its name. It is the third most planted grape in Puglia, after Negroamaro and Primitivo. Despite its relative obscurity compared to some other Italian varieties, Nero di Troia has embodied a significant role in Puglia's viticultural history due to its strong resistance to disease and ability to thrive amidst the region's dry conditions.

Nero di Troia grapes are characterised by their dense clusters and high tannic structure, resulting in wines that are rich, full-bodied and deeply coloured. The bouquet of a Nero di Troia wine typically offers enticing aromas of blackberries, plums, dark cherries, and a subtle hint of spices, leather, and liquorice. Well-made wines from this grape can have a certain elegance and delicacy despite their full-bodied nature, something that sets them apart in Italy’s pantheon of powerful reds.

Nero di Troia has often been used in blends with other local grapes, but recent years have seen a growing trend toward varietal wines that highlight the grape's distinct attributes. It beautifully pairs with a variety of food, most notably with rich, meaty dishes and mature cheeses which complement its robust character.

The grape makes an important contribution to Castel del Monte DOC red wines, one of the most prestigious Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) from the Puglia region. It is also utilised in other red blends within the region, cementing its place as a vital element in Puglia's renowned winemaking tradition.
