Petit Meslier

Petit Meslier is a peculiar and little-known white grape variety, mainly found in the Champagne region of France. Though it rarely takes centre stage, it has a noteworthy role contributing to the complex flavours of some celebrated champagne blends. The grape is admired for its high acidity and delicate, fresh, floral and fruity aromas, making it an excellent complementary grape to the more dominant Chardonnay and Pinot varieties in champagne production.

Interestingly though, Petit Meslier is considered a somewhat rare grape species. It fell out of favour in the early 20th century due to its low yields and susceptibility to disease, making it less economically viable compared to hardier, more plentiful grapes. However, in the modern era, it has seen a quiet resurgence and newfound appreciation. A handful of winemakers, charmed by the grape's unique taste and the desire to produce authentic, traditional champagne, have begun to revive the cultivation of Petit Meslier.

In appearance, Petit Meslier clusters are relatively small and compact, bearing small to medium-sized berries. The grapes have a thick skin making them slightly more resistant to frost but leaving them vulnerable to mildew. As a result, they require particular care and attention during the growing season.

When it comes to taste, Petit Meslier exhibits crisp green apple and tart citrus notes which can sometimes develop into more tropical fruit flavours in warmer vintages. In cooler years, the labour intensive grape can exhibit higher acidity with pronounced minerality. Owing to its distinct characteristic and favourable blending qualities, Petit Meslier is truly a hidden gem within the world of champagne production.

It's fair to state that Petit Meslier is not a grape for mass production but rather an artisanal treasure cherished by those who appreciate the delicate subtleties and complexities that it brings to a champagne blend.

Despite its rarity and the challenges involved in its cultivation, the Petit Meslier grape is a celebrated part of champagne history and its characteristics make it worth a taste.
