Plavac Mali

Plavac Mali is a red wine grape variety vital to international viticulture. Widely indigenous to the region of Dalmatia in Croatia, the name 'Plavac Mali' translates to 'small blue' in Croatian, a testament to the small, blueberries it produces. This grape is renowned for being the primary variety used in producing robust, full-flavoured, high-alcohol red wines in Dalmatian regions like Pelješac and Hvar.

Plavac Mali is recognised for its thick-skinned grapes which contribute to the intense, almost opaque, ruby-red tint of wines resulting from its use. The robust skins also contribute to the significant tannin levels found in these wines, presenting a distinctly tart and often bitter flavour profile. However, when managed well, these tannins can be tempered to produce a balanced, complex wine featuring traces of blackberry, dark cherry, pepper, carob, dry figs and spice.

A fascinating characteristic of the Plavac Mali grape is its rich lineage and vital role in the history of winemaking. DNA analysis in the late 20th century revealed that it is a cross between the ancient varieties Tribidrag (known as Zinfandel in America) and Dobričić grapes, verifying Plavac Mali's significant contribution to viticulture.

Growing the Plavac Mali grape requires a specific climate, generally a Mediterranean one, with ample sunshine needed for the fruit to reach optimal ripeness. The vines are usually planted on the steep, rocky slopes of coastal vineyards, where they flourish in the ample sunlight, reflecting off the Adriatic Sea, and the well-drained soil.

Plavac Mali wines lend themselves well to ageing, their substantial tannin content aiding in their preservation, thus developing more complex and fascinating flavours over time. This feature coupled with the grape’s substantial reflection of its terroir further adds to the charm and allure of the Plavac Mali wine.
