Pošip

The Pošip grape is a white grape varietal indigenous to the southern Dalmatian coast of Croatia, more specifically the island of Korčula. It is one of the oldest and most respected grape varieties within the country's vine-growing tradition, dating back to the time of the ancient Greeks. Known for its full body and high alcohol content, Pošip is often compared to southern Italy's Greco di Tufo.

This unique variety is considered a late-ripening grape, typically harvested in late September. The coastal Mediterranean climate, characterised by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, offers a perfect environment for Pošip cultivation. Additionally, stony, limestone-rich soils of Korčula Island enhance the distinct minerality and complex flavour profile of Pošip wines.

Pošip wines are celebrated for their bold character and balanced, expressive bouquets. They are typically dry and robust, with standout flavours of ripe apple, pear and tropical fruit on the palate, accompanied by hints of almond and Mediterranean herbs. On the nose, Pošip wines often exhibit floral notes, particularly acacia and white roses, combined with aromatic herbs or even mineral undertones. Their finish is usually smooth, long, and rich, thanks to the high alcohol levels and pleasant acidity the variety is known for.

In the past, Pošip grapes were primarily grown for blending purposes because of their ability to reinforce the body and alcohol content of lesser wines. However, in the late 20th century, winemakers began to recognise the true potential of this historic variety and started producing 100% Pošip wines. Today, these wines are not only highly popular domestically, but also winning acclaim on the international wine scene for their unique character and quality.

In conclusion, the Pošip grape combines ancient Mediterranean culture with a singular taste, making it an exciting discovery for any true wine enthusiast. It continues to stand as a symbol of Croatia's rich and diverse viticultural heritage.
