Poulsard

Poulsard is a rather distinctive grape varietal that originates from the Jura region in Eastern France. It's sometimes known by other names, such as Ploussard, depending on the exact locale. It might be slightly confusing for those not familiar with the nomenclature, but both names refer to the same grape.

This varietal is noted for its thin skin and succulent pulp, which contribute significantly to the characteristic of wines it produces. Because the skin is so thin, the wines often have a lighter hue, tending towards a rosey shade rather than a deep red more commonly associated with red wines. Some have even compared the colouring to that of a rosé rather than a traditional red wine.

Poulsard grapes tend to create wines with a subtle, yet complicated, array of flavours. On the palate, a Poulsard wine might present a tactile sensation of fresh berries or other ripe fruits. Depending on the terrain and climate where the grapes are cultivated, one might detect the barest hint of earthiness or even a touch spice. The end result is a wine that is perceptibly light and fruity, yet overlaying subtle complexities of flavour.

Owing to its elegant taste profile, Poulsard wines pair well with a wide range of foods. They are popularly enjoyed with poultry and fish dishes owing to their light texture and palatable tanginess. Nevertheless, they are verbose enough to accompany heartier fare. Cheese, in particular the creamy variety, often forms a delightful duet with Poulsard wines.

The Poulsard grape isn't as globally recognised or cultivated as perhaps a Cabernet or a Merlot. Nevertheless, it remains a beloved secret among wine enthusiasts who appreciate its distinctive characteristics, and its enduring legacy borne out of the unique terroir of Jura. There is a sense of excitement in sampling the complexities of this grape, undiscovered by the mainstream, which embodies all the charm and tradition of French viticulture.
