Spatburgunder

The Spätburgunder grape, commonly known as Pinot Noir in the rest of the world, is unquestionably among the most esteemed varieties grown in Germany. Replete with rich history and compelling appeal, it has cultivated a distinctly German identity while still reflecting its origins from the Burgundy region of France.

Characterised by a thin skin and tightly packed clusters, the Spätburgunder is recognised for its sensitivity to terroir, a French term that encompasses the overall climate, soil type, and geographic features of a wine-growing area. The grape thrives particularly well in cooler climates which results in being perfectly suitable for German vineyards.

Unlike robust grapes that can adapt to a variety of conditions, the capricious Spätburgunder demands meticulous viticultural techniques, often requiring the delicate hand of the grower for optimal cultivation. Its affinity for limestone and loam-based soils contribute to the complex aromatics and flavour profile of Spätburgunder wines.

The wines yielded from this grape are distinguished by their medium-body, low tannins, and high acidity. Often noted for a flavour palette that plays off between red fruits, earthy undertones, and smoky, spicy nuances; these wines boast an inimitable taste that's beyond comparison. The best examples of Spätburgunder wine present the drinker with a vivacious depth of flavour and a finish that persists, each sip revealing a different layer to the story.

The age-ability of Spätburgunder wine is another standout feature. As they age, these wines develop a complexity that aficionados compare to that of the finest Burgundies of France. Evolving in the course of time, they take on a depth, silkiness, and a harmonious balance between the fruit and earthy components, setting an illustrious standard for Pinot Noir worldwide.

To summarise, Germany's Spätburgunder presents a captivating interpretative act of the Pinot Noir grape, emphasising the region's maxims of patience, precision, and dedication to the art of winemaking.
