Sumoll

The Sumoll grape is an old, indigenous variety found largely in the Catalonia region of Spain, particularly Penedès. Characterised by a thick, dark-hued skin, the Sumoll grape's name translates to ‘dark berry’, hinting at its appearance and depth of flavour. Sumoll grapes are typically small to medium in size and grow in tightly packed clusters which require well-managed viticulture to prevent them from spoiling or being attacked by pests.

What sets the Sumoll grape apart is its intense aromatic profile filled with dark fruits, herbs, and finesse reminiscent of a well-rounded Pinot Noir. Yet, beneath the initial appeal lie complex, tannic structures that make wines produced from Sumoll rich, full-bodied and perfectly suitable for ageing. These are distinctly characterful wines, possessing refreshing acidity and robust character, which makes them worth exploring for any serious wine enthusiast. The resulting palate experience is typically a balance of juicy red fruits underpinning a framework of warm spice notes, creating an intriguing combination of flavours.

The Sumoll grape has historically been used for the production of both still and sparkling wines, the latter being especially popular in its region of origin. Despite facing threats of being phased out in the early 20th century due to high yields of easier-to-grow grape varieties, recent years have witnessed a resurgence in interest for Sumoll, driven by a new generation of winemakers keenly experimenting with this underappreciated grape. The resulting wines can range from bold, rustic reds to elegant, complex rosés and whites.

Fans of wine seeking distinctive and variable flavours would do well to explore offerings crafted from the Sumoll grape. Whether you are a novice or an aficionado, the versatility and adaptability of the Sumoll grape can provide a novel experience unlike any other, serving as a testament to the treasures hidden within the unexplored corners of viticulture.
