Alicante

Alicante, Spain, is renowned for its enthralling Mediterranean landscape coupled with a rich tradition of viticulture, lending itself to the production of unique and beautiful wines. One of the most distinct features of Alicante wines is the Monastrell grape, which is native to the region and creates a full-bodied, powerful, and spicy red wine. This grape thrives in the region's hot, arid climate, and makes up a significant proportion of the red wine production.

Cultivating wine for over 2,000 years, Alicante’s vineyards sprawl across an array of terrains, producing diverse wine styles. From high-altitude mountainous vineyards to warmer, coastal climates, each wine tells a story of its specific terroir. Many vineyards hold organic and biodynamic certifications, reflecting the region’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

Alicante also produces a distinctive sweet dessert wine called Fondillón. Rich, velvety and created from overripe Monastrell grapes, it originates from the late Middle Ages; no other wine region in the world is authorised to use this name. The wine is kept in ancient solera systems, often maturing over decades.

Apart from the acclaimed reds, Alicante also offers dry, crisp and aromatic white wines, like the ones made from Moscatel de Alejandría, a variety known for its floral and fruity profiles. Rosés with lively acidity and intense fruity aromas, made primarily from Monastrell, are also a refreshing choice for a balmy Mediterranean evening.

To sip a glass of Alicante wine is to taste the essence of Spanish passion, history and the Mediterranean sun-soaked vineyards - an utterly charming experience for any wine enthusiast. Just as the Spanish phrase goes, ‘El vino es poesía en una botella,’ meaning, ‘Wine is poetry in a bottle,’ Alicante wines truly encapsulate this sentiment.
