Montlouis

Situated in the verdant heart of France's Loire Valley, the Montlouis appellation is renowned for its exquisite wines, significantly contributing to the country's reputation as a premier wine producer. The appellation, sandwiched between the cities of Tours and Amboise, spans about 400 hectares of vineyards, primarily flourishing with Chenin Blanc, locally referred to as Pineau de la Loire. Montlouis wines have a distinctive quality, owed in large part to their unique soil composition that includes a myriad of pebbles, sand and clay overlaid on tuffeau stone – a characteristic limestone of the valley. This fascinating geological contribution results in wines manifesting a lovely minerality, complemented by fresh, vibrant acidity and arresting flavours of apple, pear, and quince, with honeyed floral undertones, particularly in the late harvest wines.

The climate also plays a crucial role in shaping the essence of Montlouis wines. Being further inland, the region experiences a more continental climate, with greater variations in temperature, contributing to the concentration and ripeness of the grapes.

Montlouis was only recognised as an independent appellation in 1937, having been part of the Vouvray appellation up until then. Despite its relatively recent recognition, Montlouis has rapidly carved a niche for itself, with wine connoisseurs, critics, and enthusiasts embracing its characterful wines.
